Generate Ideas
The fifth step in Outcome-Driven Innovation is to generate and validate solution ideas. Any solution must include a platform, a business model, and a set of features.
Let's review the traditional brainstorming method to see why it fails so frequently. The first rule of brainstorming is "there are no bad ideas." Of course, this is absurd. There is literally an infinite supply of bad ideas. The problem is identifying which ideas are bad and eliminating them as quickly as possible.
We don't generate any ideas until we have all the criteria to judge which ideas are good and bad. And the criteria to judge ideas are the customer needs, i.e. jobs and outcomes. So we don't start our idea generation process until we know all of the jobs, all of the outcomes, all of the opportunities, the size of the Securable Market, and the optimal strategy to pursue. With all of these criteria, we can generate the best ideas to satisfy the customer needs and beat the competition.
Once we have generated ideas, we validate if they help the customer get the job done better by quantifying the satisfaction levels with each of the outcomes. This is a highly accurate way to analyze the potential success of the product idea because satisfying outcomes determines if customers will adopt a new solution to get the job done.
